Working in Winter
Masonry work through the winter months is not ideal due to cold weather, but other seasons come with their own challenges as well. Spring and fall come with wet conditions, summer comes with warm conditions that not only makes it dangerous for working but may lead to mortar setting too quickly ( flash setting ), and all seasons come with wind that can also lead to flash setting.
When temperatures plummet masonry work can still be done. Materials are heated to maintain above freezing temperatures, hoardings are constructed with insulated tarps, and the work areas are heated for 24 hours with propane or electric heat. In doing this your controlling the environment and protecting the masonry from freezing temperatures. Your also protecting the masonry from wind and precipitation.
Protecting mortar from freezing before it cures is one of the most important priorities during the coldest seasons. Mortar takes a couple days to almost fully gain its cured characteristics. However a lot of strength from the mortar is evident only hours after it has been used. An additive is added to the mortar in winter time called “accelerant” that accelerates the curing process of the mortar so it needs less time in heated conditions before it gains it's strength.
Bricks and other building materials during winter should not be installed if their surface temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius. If materials were left outside they should be brought in ahead of time to warm up before they are used. Materials for making mortar such as water, sand, and cementicious materials should be maintained at above freezing temperatures, as well.
There are many rules and CSA standards regarding cold weather masonry work. Provisions such as covering work with a tarp should start when outside temperatures are around 5 degrees celcius. There are things I wouldn't do in the winter time such as, installing stick on thin stone veneer. Most all other masonry installations, and repairs will be fine, if adequately protected from freezing temperatures.
